1 in 8 online EU Christmas sales come from mobile

Slightly more than 12 percent of the total online sales during the holiday season in Europe will come from mobile devices like smartphones and tablets. That’s an increase of 68 percent compared to the same period a year ago. The growth in Europe is bigger than the mobile holiday sales growth in the United States.

That’s according to data from the Online Shopping Forecast Adobe published today. In the United States there might be 14 percent of the total online holiday sales that comes from mobile, but the growth from the same months last year is only a 40 percent increase. So one might say mobile adaption is now growing harder in Europe than in the US. What speaks in favor of the United States is the fact Adobe’s expecting consumers over there to spend more online during the upcoming holiday season.

While the American consumers go shopping massively on days like Black Friday (29 November) of Cyber Monday (2 December), the highest grossing online shopping day in Europe is expected to be the 9th of December, where the online sales will be 2.74 times higher than the average daily online sales in 2013.

Adobe also looked at some specific facts about the upcoming holiday season online sales in several European countries. The highest grossing online shopping day in the UK will probably be December 2nd, just like in the United Stated. Online sales in the UK that day will be 2.18 times the 2013 average daily online sales. Compared to other European countries, the UK is expected to have the highest mobile share of online sales during the holiday season with 20.4% of all online holiday sales coming from a tablet or smartphone.

In France the highest grossing online shopping day will probably be January 7th. That’s kind of strange, because that day is outside of the typical holiday shopping season that ends with Christmas. And with ‘only’ 9.5% of online holiday sales that come from mobile France has some catching up to do. Germany will see its highest grossing online shopping day occur on December 8th, while the Netherlands will have its best day on December 16th.
