Bol.com starts selling men’s and women’s clothing

Bol.com, the biggest online store in the Netherlands, is opening its platform for external vendors that sell men’s and women’s clothing. The move follows one week after Amazon announced it will open its platform in the Netherlands for third party sellers.

Men’s and women’s clothing was thus far the biggest product category still missing on Bol.com, the company that – just like Amazon – started as an online bookstore but soon expanded its assortment extensively.

In the last couple of years, Bol.com introduced the sales of children’s clothing, shoes, accessories and sportswear, but regular men’s and women’s clothing was still missing. Until now, as the company has announced its platform is open to vendors selling these kinds of products.

About You joins Bol.com marketplace

The Dutch ecommerce giant already announced major (local) brands and fashion retailers such as About You, Jack & Jones, Miss Etam, Claudia Sträter and Zeeman will sell their products on the Bol.com marketplace.

“As a platform we strive for the most complete range of products for our ten million customers, so we can be the starting point of shopping”, Margaret Versteden, Chief Commercial Officer at bol.com explains.

“Many customers were already searching for women’s and men’s fashion. That’s why it makes sense to add this product range and make our assortment more complete than ever. Selling fashion is a specialty and it means different customer needs and behavior than with other product categories on our platform.”

Selling fashion is a speciality.

‘Just a coincidence’

Bol.com claims it has taken quite some time to research and develop the customer needs and behavior in this area. Versteden says it’s just a concidence that Bol.com has decided to take this step, only one week after Amazon.nl opened its platform to sellers. “We have been working towards this, for years”, she says.
