Amazon is the biggest retailer in the world and also among the most valuable companies there is. Amazon was launched in 1994 by Jeff Bezos and transformed from an online bookstore into an international retailer, hosting company, department store, supermarket chain, pharmacy, logistics company and much more.
The leading online retailer of books
Amazon started as an online bookstore, after Jeff Bezos was working in finance and realized the internet was here to stay. He put together a list of things he could sell online and eventually picked books. The company went public in 1997. In its S-1 documents, Bezos was very straightforward about what it is the company did back then: “Amazon.com is the leading online retailer of books.” (Leading back then was possibly with ‘just’ 80,000 average daily visits in March 1997.) Around the time of its IPO, Amazon had only 256 employees, up from eleven at the end of 1995. Nowadays, the company has 566,000 employees worldwide.
Expanding its product offerings and services
In the period between 1998 and 2004, Amazon started to expand its offering. Aside from opening many different product categories on its website, the company also started to offer different kinds of services, such as Free Super Savers Shipping. Later on, the Seattle-based company also started offering cloud computing platforms through Amazon Web Services and released its own consumer electronics, such as the Amazon Kindle, Amazon Fire and Amazon Echo.
One of the things that made Amazon even more popular among online consumers, is Amazon Prime, a paid membership that it introduced in 2005. First, Amazon Prime only offered free two-day shipping, but soon more and more features were being added, such as access to music libraries, a video streaming service and Prime Now, which offers one-hour delivery.
