Famous furniture retailer from Sweden Visit website

Ikea is a world-famous furniture retailer from Sweden. The company was founded by Ingvar Kamprad in 1943, when he was only 17 years old. The name ‘IKEA’ consists of his initials and those of Elmtaryd and Agunnaryd, respectively the family farm where he was born and his hometown.

The Swedish company is well-known for its furniture, kitchen appliances, and home accessories that are ready to assemble. It started selling products using this concept in 1956, when technician Gillis Lundgren (also the designer of the famous Billy bookcase) wanted to transport a table in his car and saw off the legs so he could put it inside.

Ikea is well-known for its ready-to-assemble furniture.

In 2001, Ikea launched its first ecommerce websites, by launching online stores in Sweden and Denmark. Other markets followed, but for years, Ikea had not fully embraced ecommerce. In 2015, CEO Peter Agnefjäll admitted the company was late to ecommerce, but said it was working on a new website and online supply chain. The company announced it had plans to significantly grow its ecommerce business.
