Joom is an online marketplace that sells mostly Chinese-made and low-priced products. The company has it headquarters in Russia and is very focused on Europe. This continent accounts for 50 percent of Joom’s gross merchandise value, while the country of Russia makes up 45 percent.
Joom was founded by Ilya Shirokov in 2016. Previously, Shirokov was the CEO of Russian social network Classmates and vice-president of Mail.Ru Group’s social networking business.
10 million products for 100 million users
According to the company page on LinkedIn, Joom managed to reach 100 million users across the globe within two years of its start in 2016. It now offers about 10 million products, ranging from bluetooth earbuds to bathing suits. Most of these items come from China, similar to other popular online marketplaces such as Wish and AliExpress.
Targeting merchants in France
But Joom wants to add more and more products from European merchants. In 2019 it started recruiting French merchants. “The next step will be helping French merchants sell their products in Europe. Then we will target merchants in other European countries”, CEO and co-founder Ilya Shirokov explained. “If we are successful in France, we will be successful in Europe.”
