ZalandoMajor online fashion platform Visit website
Zalando is a major online fashion platform from Germany and is often recognized as one of the biggest successes in the European ecommerce industry. The company was founded by Rocket Internet, Robert Gentz and David Schneider in 2008. The online fashion retailer soon gained some serious traction online, driven by an aggressive marketing campaign both online and offline. For example, already in September 2009, less than one year after its foundation, Zalando produced its first TV spot.
The company initially started as some sort of European answer to US online retailer Zappos.com (some might say Zalando blatantly copied that website, something incubator Rocket Internet is well-known for), but in the spring of 2010, the company expanded its product range by including clothing. Soon, Zalando started its first private label. In March 2012, Zalando opened its first physical store. In the Köpenicker Straße in Berlin, the fashion company opened the doors of a Zalando outlet. This year also marked the launch of its first mobile app in Germany.
Zalando becomes an online fashion platform
At the end of 2013, Zalando becomes a private German stock corporation and after launching partner programs in several countries across Europe, Zalando slowly transforms from an online fashion retailer into a online fashion platform that enables brands and retailers to sell their fashion items to millions of customer across the continent.
Zalando’s flexible delivery and return policy
Zalando is well-known for its very flexible delivery and return policy. For years, the company offers customers the possibility to return items within 100 days for free. In September 2015, Zalando launches its same-day delivery pilot in Berlin, while in London the platform launches a pilot service for collecting return packages from customers. These pilots got subsequently rolled out in other cities in Europe.
In 2018, Zalando introduced its beauty category, while it also launched its online store in Ireland and the Czech Republic. The ecommerce company is currently available in 17 markets across Europe.
