Deutsche Post: strong revenue growth thanks to ecommerce

Deutsche Post DHL Group saw its revenue increase by 4.4 percent to 14.8 billion euros during the second quarter of this year. It’s mostly the company’s international parcel and ecommerce business that drove this strong growth.

For Deutsche Post, the second quarter was the strongest one in its history, and also the seventh consecutive quarter in which the German company posted an all-time quarterly high. “We are very satisfied with both the second quarter and the entire first half of the year. Our company is growing in all areas and steadily increasing earnings”, said CEO Frank Appel.

Ecommerce and Parcel: 2 billion euros

Revenue in the company’s Post – Ecommerce – Parcel division increased by 4.8 percent to 4.3 billion euros in the second quarter and now accounts for 29 percent of the company’s total revenue. The growth of this division can mostly be attributed to the growth in volumes and revenue in the Ecommerce – Parcel business unit. Parcel Europe grew 61.5 percent, while Ecommerce increased by 15.1 percent. The revenue of the Ecommerce – Parcel business unit is now worth 2 billion euros.

Parcel Europe grew so hard in revenue, because the acquired UK Mail business is now included in the unit’s consolidated results. UK Mail generated revenue of 127 million euros in the second quarter. Organically, revenue at Parcel Europe increased by 21.2 percent.

Yesterday, Dutch postal company PostNL also shared its second quarter results. This company thinks ecommerce could account for 45 percent of its revenue by 2020.
