Ecommerce in France could top the 100 billion mark next year, according to estimates from the national ecommerce association Fevad. For this year, it’s predicted that online retail sales in France will exceed 90 billion euros.
The French ecommerce industry is said to increase to these numbers, thanks to a growing number of online retailers and the fact consumers turn to the internet and smartphones to shop more often. If the local ecommerce industry will be indeed worth 90 billion euros at the end of this year, it would mean a 14.3 percent increase compared to the situation last year, when French consumers spent 81.7 billion euros online. In comparison: ecommerce in France was worth €72 billion in 2016.
Mcommerce sales in France up 38 percent
A major part of the 81.7 billion euros spent online in France happened during the holiday season, when 16.5 billion euros was spent online, Fevad writes. This corresponds with a 17.5 percent year-on-year increase. When compared to the situation in 2016, sales generated on online marketplaces increased by 15 percent, while mcommerce registered a 38 percent growth.
Average basket value: €65.5
The average basket value in France is now 65.5 euros, a decrease from 5 percent. For the seventh straight year, this value has declined. According to the French ecommerce association this is thanks to lower or free shipping costs and the development of unlimited delivery subscriptions. And whereas a French consumer conducted on average 28 transactions in 2016, this number was already 33 last year.
Last year, ecommerce represented 8.7 percent of the total retail industry in France, while this was 7.7 percent in 2016.
