Ecommerce in Czech Republic: €5.25 billion in 2018

Ecommerce in the Czech Republic was worth 135 billion Czech koruny (or 5.25 billion euros) in 2018. That’s twice as much as in 2014. Last year, 90 percent of Czech consumers shopped online at least once.

This is shown in the report “Payments Landscape in the Czech Republic: Opportunities and Risks to 2022” by Research and Markets. They say the growing adoption of ecommerce in the Czech Republic is due to increased confidence in ecommerce, online security, and a number of online stores.

Most popular payment method in the Czech Republic

The report focuses, as the title might have given away, primarily on the payments landscape in this Eastern-European country. It shows that cash is still the most popular payment method in the Czech Republic. Cash accounted for 62.1 percent of the total payment transaction volume last year. However, the use of payment cards has been growing during the last four years.

When we take a look at just the card payments, it seems that debit cards are the most popular ones. Both in terms of number of cards in circulation and the transaction value. “The frequency of debit card payments per card registered a strong review-period compound annual growth rate of 19.2 percent, with 89.3 times last year.”

Credit and charge cards however aren’t very popular in the Czech Republic. There were on average only 13 cards per 100 individuals last year.
