‘Ecommerce in Turkey will grow 30-35 percent in 2018’

Turkey aims to raise its ecommerce revenue to over 10 billion euros by the end of this year. The Turkish ecommerce association ETID thinks the ecommerce industry in Turkey could increase significantly this year.

Ecommerce in Turkey was worth about 6.6 billion euros in 2016, statistics from Informatics Industry Association (TUBISAD) show, while 8.6 billion euros was predicted for 2017. And now it aims to raise its ecommerce volume to 50 billion Turkish liras, or 10 billion euros, by the end of this year, Emre Ekmekci, chairman of ETID, told Anadolu Agency.

Ecommerce accounts for 3.5% of total trade sector

“We expect an increase of 30 to 35 percent in the sector this year”, he stated. The chairman said online shopping in Turkey has seen constant growth and that ecommerce will be an inseparable part of consumer life. “Several retail companies had a digital transformation in Turkey, and the digitalization of retail trade raises the sector and contributes ecommerce culture to the country.”

Currently, ecommerce accounts for 3.5 percent of the total trade sector in Turkey. According to Ekmekci, this rate is below the world average, even though ecommerce in Turkey is really moving upwards, he says.

200,000 people working in ecommerce sector

The Turkish ecommerce industry employs nearly 200,000 people in various areas, such as digital marketing, information technology and logistics.
