NL: Demand same day delivery grew 69%

While Dutch parcel deliverers saw a strong growth in order volume last year, Dutch consumers are increasingly expecting fast deliveries for their online purchases. The demand for same day delivery grew with no less than 69 percent in 2021.

Parcel deliverers are increasingly offering same day delivery as a premium service. Within the Netherlands, there are several couriers offering it, such as Trunkrs and Instabox. The recently published Sendcloud Shipping Index indicates that Dutch consumers are increasingly demanding quick deliveries when they place an order in an online store.

18% of consumers want same day delivery

According to earlier research by shipping platform Sendcloud, as many as 18 percent of Dutch consumers have a need for deliveries within the same day as placing their order. The 69 percent growth in the latest study indicates that this trend is continuing. Additionally, more than half of Dutch consumers (58 percent) expect that same day delivery is an option if an order is placed before noon.

‘We expect that the demand for same day delivery and green delivery options will increase in 2022.’

“Consumers are becoming increasingly demanding when it comes to parcel delivery and want to decide for themselves where, when and how a parcel is delivered. We expect demand for same-day delivery and green delivery options to increase further in 2022. It is therefore a godsend for online stores to respond to the demand for flexible delivery by offering more options,” says Rob van den Heuvel, CEO and Co-founder at Sendcloud.

Fast delivery in 2021

Dutch logistics company PostNL delivered a record number of 384 million parcels in 2021. Despite the pressure on couriers, no less than 83 percent of parcels last year were delivered on the next day. Even in the busiest month, December, 81 percent of parcels were delivered within one day. According to the report, the average delivery time of a parcel was 1.3 days.
