Picnic opens second fulfillment center in Germany

Online-only supermarket Picnic has opened its second fulfillment center in Germany. The site, which is 15,000 square meters big, has opened its doors in Herne, in the Ruhr area.

Picnic says it has been working hard in the past few weeks to adapt its logistics to the increased demand, now the coronavirus is spreading across Europe. With help from the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia, the Dutch company was able to quickly complete the new fulfillment center in Herne.

1,000 new jobs created in the Herne area

“Picnic is a real stroke of luck for the city of Herne”, its mayor Frank Dudda said. “Right now, new forms of shopping are in particularly high demand. The fulfillment center is an excellent fit in our strategy for the economic regeneration of the city.” With the opening of the new distribution site, 1,000 new jobs will be created in the area.

Frederic Knaudt, co-founder and CEO of Picnic Germany, calls the second fulfillment center in Germany an important milestone for the Dutch supermarket. “With the significantly increased capacities, we will be able to supply more customers in our current delivery areas and we will also be able to deliver to more locations in North Rhine-Westphalia in the near future.

200 employees hired recently, more to come

Due to the coronavirus Covid-19, the demand for Picnic deliveries has more then doubled. As a result, the company has hired over 200 new employees in the past three weeks. The new fulfillment center will also increase the number of created jobs, as Picnic is looking for shoppers, runners, operation managers, caretakers and more in the Herne area.
