Zalando’s logistics centre will be Europe’s biggest

Zalando is expanding its logistics centre in Mönchengladbach, Germany. Its facility is already 78,000 square meters large, but now 56,000 sqm of expansion space will be developed alongside the current logistics center. When it’s finished (development is due for completion in September 2014), it will be the largest dedicated ecommerce logistics centre in Europe.

The new building will comprise 41,000 sqm of traditional storage space, with 9,000 sqm of mezzanine space and 6,000 sqm for offices ans social areas. The expansion of the logistics centre in Mönchengladbach also includes infrastructure upgrades to the overall site.

Developer Goodman and Zalando already had the largest dedicated ecommerce facility, with a logistics centre in Erfurt that’s 128,000 sqm big. Now with the expansion in Mönchengladblach, Goodman leases a total space of more than 260,000 sqm to Zalando. “The new expansion space in Mönchengladbach builds on our existing strong relationship with Zalando and highlights the continued rapid growth in the e-retail sector, as well as the versatility of well-located German logistics facilities in meeting the regional and international distribution needs of our customers,” said Jordan Corynen, Goodman Director, Germany.

Zalando isn’t the only online fashion retailer that´s about to expand its logistics center heavily. Only a few weeks ago Dutch retailer Wehkamp.nl announced it was about to  build world’s biggest online shopping logistics centre for €100million in The Netherlands. And Asos, one of the world’s largest online apparel and beauty retailers, announced in September this year it would extend its distribution centre in Barnsley, by doubling its storage capacity.
