Getir acquires Blok, expands to Spain and Italy

Turkish grocery delivery startup Getir has acquired Blok, a similar rapid delivery service from Spain. The acquisition gives Getir immediate access to Spain and Italy, where Blok was available most in Madrid, Barcelona and Milan. Prior to the acquisition, Blok was preparing to launch in Portugal, so this country is on Getir’s roadmap too now.

So far Getir has managed to grow organically, but now it has made its first acquisition. According to TechCrunch, Barcelona-based startup Blok was already looking for a buyer.

Getir will not become an acquisition company.

“Getir will not become an acquisition company, acquiring one after the other. That’s not the way we operate”, CEO and co-founder Nazim Salur told TechCrunch. “But, it’s a free market and if there is a good reason, a solid good reason, we might consider it. We won’t be going after ten different companies in this world, but if the right opportunity shows itself we’ll talk to people.”

Getir is expanding fast

Getir was founded in Turkey in 2015 and started as a fast grocery delivery service. Soon it expanded its business not only geographically, but also in terms of offering. It now also offers GetirMore (longer delivery turnarounds), GetirFood (restaurant delivery), GetirLocals (local business delivery) and GetirWater (water delivery).

Getir raised almost 850 million euros so far.

As of today, Getir is available in Turkey, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, France, and Germany. Last month, the Turkish company raised about 470 million euros in its latest funding round. This funding brings the total Getir has raised from investors to almost 850 million euros so far this year.

Getir’s competitors in the US and Europe

These millions of euros will be used to launch Getir in the US, where it needs to compete with local players such as GoPuff. In Europe, well-known competitors are Gorillas, Flink, Glovo, Zapp, Dija, Cajoo, and Weezy.
