Amazon leads new top 150 European marketplaces
Amazon fills the top two spots in a new list of leading marketplaces in Europe. The ranking is made by the German Bundesverband Onlinehandel (BVOH). The interest group also made a separate top 50 for Germany. That is also led by Amazon.
BVOH bases its ranking on various sources, including data from SimilarWeb, Tranco and Cisco Umbrello, supplemented by its own research. A specially developed algorithm weighs the collected data and creates the ranking of the top 150 most popular online marketplaces.
Amazon the dominator
The report, based on years of collected data, promises to expand the business opportunities for online retailers and brand manufacturers and open doors to new sales channels: “With this unique industry report, online retailers can identify the best options for their business and take their business development to the next level”, BVOH states.
Amazon fills half of the European top 10.
Of all marketplaces in the top 150, the report indicates which range they carry, where they get their primary income from and whether they are also active as a seller on their platform. Amazon’s websites fill half of Europe’s top 10 marketplaces.

German top 10 marketplaces
For the first time, the report also includes a separate ranking of online marketplaces in Germany. The list would enable sellers in this market to make informed decisions about the added value that the various platforms can offer.
The top 10 marketplaces in Germany
The Bundesverband Onlinehandel made the first ranking of online marketplaces in 2015. This was at the request of the European Commission. The latest report contributes to the mission of providing members with the best possible information and resources, according to BVOH President Oliver Prothmann.
“We help them thrive in a competitive industry.”
Non-members of BVOH, which represents the interests of medium-sized German multichannel entrepreneurs, can also read the European marketplaces report without registration.
Your own marketplace
In addition to the challenges and opportunities of selling via marketplaces, the report also discusses what is involved in starting your own marketplace. Otto, Zalando, Kaufland and MediaMarkt (all represented in the German top 10 above) have opened their doors in recent years. Leader Amazon pioneered this model.
