Amazon opens first European air freight center

Amazon has opened its very first air freight center in Europe. The 20,000 square meter cargo facility is located at the Leipzig-Halle Airport in Germany. It will be used to sort parcels, and to load and unload trucks and aircraft.

The air freight center will create a new connection within the company’s European logistics network. Amazon has also leased two Boeing 737-800s, which have the typical design and logo of Amazon Air. These two airplanes will complement the existing fleet of over 70 aircraft that Amazon Air operates worldwide.

“Companies and end customers benefit from strong, reliable supply chains. And how important these are, has become particularly clear during the corona pandemic”, Michael Kretschmer, Minister-President of Saxony, has explained.

Over 200 extra jobs created

Amazon Air will handle two flights a day from the new site. The air freight center creates over 200 jobs in the region, in addition to the 1,500 existing Amazon jobs in Leipzig.
