Takeaway.com acquires Foodarena in Switzerland

Online food delivery service Takeaway.com has acquired Foodarena, a similar company from Switzerland, from its main competitor Delivery Hero. The acquisition doesn’t mean Takeaway.com is entering a new market, as the Dutch company was already operating a food delivery service in Switzerland.

Takeaway.com announced the acquisition news earlier today [pdf], not disclosing any financial details of the deal. The company says this acquisition will further strengthen its presence and increase its restaurant offering throughout Switzerland.

Acquisition in line with strategy to expand in Europe

“We have seen good traction in the Swiss market, which we believe is currently still highly underpenetrated”, says Joerg Gerbig, the Chief Operating Officer of Takeaway.com. “The acquisition of Foodarena will enhance our market position in Switzerland and is in line with our growth strategy to further expand our market leadership position in Europe.”

Delivery Hero commented by saying it will continue their strategy to consolidate their leadership positions. “The sale of Foodarena will allow us to focus our efforts and resources in markets where we have clear leadership positions and longer growth opportunities”, Duncan McIntyre, SVP Corporate Finance & Head of Investor Relations, added.

At the beginning of this year, Takeaway’s founder and CEO Jitse Groen said he would consider merging with its European rival Delivery Hero.
