Swiss Post tests Starship’s self-driving delivery robots

Swiss Post will experiment with self-driving robots delivering goods over the last mile. The Swiss postal company will use models from robot manufacturer Starship Technologies. Last month, this company enabled two retailers in the UK and two companies in Germany to experiment with the robots.

The self-driving robots from Starship Technologies are slowly driving throughout Europe. Experiments have been conducted in the United Kingdom and Germany, and now people can see them drive through the streets in Switzerland, more precisely in Bern, Köniz and Biberist

‘Robots perfect addition to delivery logistics’

Swiss Post thinks delivery robots could make a perfect addition to delivery logistics and fill a gap in the market that the postal company has not yet explored. “We envisage using this solution for special items that need to be delivered flexibly, quickly and inexpensively in a local neighborhood. Some of the conceivable applications include same-day and same-hour delivery, grocery deliveries or even home deliveries of medical products”, Swiss Post says in the press release. Mail carriers currently don’t cover this kind of ad-hoc logistics on the last mile, so that’s why Swiss Post is now experimenting with the Starship robots.
