Bauhaus: ‘100,000 new items thanks to 100 sellers’

A year ago, German retail chain Bauhaus launched its online marketplace. Since then, it has partnered with 100 sellers. As a result, they have added almost 100,000 new items to the assortment. “The real work began after the products went live”, said Johannes Wechsler, Chief Digital Officer at the company.

Bauhaus is a retail chain that sells products for home improvement, gardening and workshop. It was founded in Germany, but its headquarters are currently in Switzerland. In addition to its online marketplace, it also has brick-and-mortar stores in a total of 19 Euopean countries.

One year since the launch

In august 2025, the company launched its own marketplace. Since then, it has added almost 100,000 new items to the assortment with 100 partner sellers. According to the company, these products receive good reviews, and sellers are able to deliver on time. Return rates are comparable with Bauhaus’ own assortment.

‘There was a visibility issue’

But according to the company’s CDO, it ran into a challenge quickly. “We saw a disconnect: while marketplace products represented a big part of our assortment, they were getting a very low share of product page views. This wasn’t a sales issue; it was a visibility issue”, Johannes Wechsler wrote in a post on LinkedIn.

Since then, search algorithms have been updates to ensure that new products get more visibility in search results. They have also developed a ‘whitespot strategy’, which can fill gaps in the assortment. By doing so, they can consciously bring in specialized brands, price points, or product types. Payment options for marketplace products have also been expanded, to create a more unified customer experience.
