Number of Shopify stores grew 200%
Ever since the outbreak of the coronavirus, ecommerce has grown significantly. An indicator of that growth is the number of online stores on platforms like Shopify. Between March 2020 and January 2022, the number of stores on Shopify grew with 201.53 percent.
2.5 million new stores
Ecommerce platform Shopify is a well-known platform for entrepreneurs who want to launch their online store. This strong growth can be attributed to the corona measures that were enforced in most European countries, including lockdowns. As mortar-and-brick stores had to close, businesses had to look for other ways to grow their revenue.
Shopify customers per country
Most of Shopify’s customers are based in the US. In January 2022, the platform has 2.666.627 online stores coming from the US, which is a growth of 178.53 percent when compared to March 2020 (957.393 online stores at that time). The number of European online stores on Shopify has also grown significantly. There are now 156.466 online stores on Shopify from the UK, which is a growth of 218.81 percent. It is followed by France, with 59.590 stores and a growth of 320.85 percent.
However, the number of customers in Germany has grown the strongest with 480.18 percent. The platform now runs 78.638 online stores from Germany, while there were 13.554 stores in March 2020.
Mostly smaller businesses
According to Genus AI, most newly added websites on Shopify consist of smaller players that are not equipped to compete with ecommerce giants like Amazon. These smaller businesses focus on customer satisfaction, secure and user-friendly websites, to get higher ratings. That way, holding on to a vast customer base becomes easier and helps them compete with larger players.
