Spanish ecommerce increased 18% in first quarter
In the first quarter of the year, ecommerce in Spain reached more than 25.7 billion euros. Compared to the same period in 2024, this was an increase of 18.7 percent. A majority of online transactions were destined for abroad, meaning that cross-border ecommerce is popular in Spain.
This is according to new data from the Spanish CNMCData portal, which is run by the national authority for markets and competition. In 2024, online revenue came to 95.2 billion euros. Compared to a year earlier, that was an increase of 13.1 percent.
474 million euros in online transactions
The latest report looked at Spanish online turnover between January and March this year. Compared to the same period in 2024, the turnover increased 18.7 percent. In that period, the turnover reached 21.8 billion euros.
Spanish transactions increased almost 15% compared to the first quarter in 2024
The Spanish transaction volume came to over 474 million euros in the first quarter of the year. This was an increase of 14.9 percent compared to the same period last year, when turnover was 412.7 million euros.
Travel increased the strongest
When looking at online sectors individually, it becomes apparent that especially travel agencies and tour operators showed the strongest growth, with 9.4 percent. Air transport followed in second place (6.7 percent growth) and clothing in third (5.9 percent).
65.7% of online transactions went to stores abroad
The report also looked into Spanish cross-border ecommerce. According to the CNMC, the net foreign trade balance (the difference between purchases from abroad to Spain and purchases from Spain abroad) showed a deficit of 11.2 billion euros. This means that Spanish consumers import more online goods than is exported by the country.
When looking at the transactions, 34.3 percent of online purchases and sales are destined for Spain, while 65.7 percent went abroad. The total turnover of transactions directed abroad in the first quarter came to 14.6 billion euros. Compared to a year earlier, that was an increase of 14.6 percent.
Cross-border activities within Europe
And purchases from abroad to Spain reached 3.3 billion euros, an increase of 21.7 percent. Most of these came from Europe, just as the majority of the purchases from Spain to abroad. At least 94.2 percent went to online stores located in the European Union.

Online revenue generated in Spain, going to local stores, reached 7.9 billion euros in the first quarter. Compared to a year earlier, that was an increase of 23.8 percent.
