DHL and Poste Italiane launch joint venture for parcel lockers

DHL eCommerce has formed a joint venture with the state postal company Poste Italiane. Together, they aim to build a network of ten thousand parcel lockers across Italy. The opening of the first parcel locker in Rome marks the start of Locker Italia, the name given to the joint venture.

This move comes a year after the announcement of the strategic partnership between DHL Group and Poste Italiane for the Italian and international parcel markets. At the time, they agreed that DHL would manage the road delivery of Poste Italiane parcels to European destinations. Conversely, the Italian postal company would deliver DHL parcels shipped to Italy. They also announced the creation of a joint venture “to create a modern and sustainable network of parcel lockers in Italy”.

Locker Italia

Locker Italia has now been officially launched, along with the first parcel locker under that name in the capital. In the coming period, ten thousand lockers will be installed at central locations across the country. Locker Italia adopts a provider-independent approach, offering both senders and recipients the highest possible convenience, according to the initiative’s founders.

The joint venture, led by Enrico Rosina, aims to “create an efficient and seamless experience for receiving and sending parcels” and to become the largest provider of parcel lockers in Italy.

Densest parcel network in Europe

DHL maintains the largest and densest parcel network on the continent. A year ago, the logistics service provider celebrated reaching the milestone of 100,000 access points in Europe, which at the time included 80,000 service points and 20,000 parcel lockers. The partnership with Poste Italiane marks DHL’s continued investment in expanding its network. In early 2023, the company formed a joint venture in Poland with Cainiao, the logistics arm of Alibaba. Later that year, DHL acquired the Turkish parcel delivery provider MNG Kargo to strengthen its position in Turkey.
