Most European countries have an average of daily time spent using social media below the worldwide average of 2:31 hours. Romanians use it a bit more often, 2:32 hours a day. Additionally, almost 26 percent of social media users worldwide use it to find products to purchase.

Germany (1:41 hours), the Netherlands (1:39 hours), Austria and Belgium (both 1:34 hours) have the lowest average daily time spent using social media. These data come from Meltwater and We Are Social in their “Digital 2023 Report”. The report looked into worldwide internet use.

Worldwide, internet users spend 38 percent of their time on the internet on social media. Russian internet users score the lowest when compared to other European countries, with 28.5 percent of their time on the internet spent on social media. Belgians scored a little higher, with 28.7 percent.

When looking at the reasons why people use social media, keeping in touch with friends and family is the main one (47.1 percent). However, finding inspiration for things to do and buy is also an important reason (27.3 percent). And 25.9 percent of social media users are on social media platforms to find products to purchase. This means that using social media to promote products in online stores can help online sellers to generate more sales.
