Court: ‘Amazon France should only sell essential items’

Amazon must restrict its orders in France in the coming weeks, due to measures associated with Covid-19. That’s what a court decided earlier this week. Amazon can only accept orders of groceries, hygiene and health-related products.

Amazon had 24 hours to comply or it would have to pay a fine of 1 million euros per day, the French union group Sud Commerce tweeted yesterday.This is also the organization that brought Amazon to court, with a claim that over 100 workers from Amazon France were being force to work in close proximity.

Restrictions during one month

A court in Nanterre, near Paris, has now decided that for a one month period, Amazon may only deliver food, medical and hygiene products to its customers in France. According to the court, Amazon France hasn’t done enough to protect its staff amid the coronavirus pandemic.

If Amazon doesn’t listen to the French court and work with employees representatives for the health evaluation, the ecommerce giant will be faced with a fine of 1 million euros per day.

Amazon appeals the verdict

According to Forbes, Amazon will appeal the verdict, because the company implemented daily temperature checks, two-meter social distancing measures between workers and a tripling of its maintenance and cleaning staff.
