Dutch average Amazon commission fees nearly 20%

Dutch average Amazon commission fees nearly 20%

In the Netherlands, Amazon is the most expensive marketplace for online sellers. Looking at average commission fees, the platform stands out from other marketplaces with an average rate of 19.7 percent in August.

At the end of last year, Amazon announced that it had reduced its fees for selling partners. FiveX, a Dutch ecommerce software platform, recently carried out research into the ten largest online marketplaces in the Netherlands.

Average commission rate of 14.5%

According to the study, marketplaces in the Netherlands charge an average commission rate of 14.5 percent. Amazon stands out from the rest with a rate of 19.7 percent. The French platform Cdiscount charges an average of 11.2 percent in the Netherlands, making it the cheapest option for sellers.

On Bol, sellers pay a lower commission rate than the average: 14.2%

The difference between the other platforms is less pronounced. The standard deviation across all ten is 2.25 percentage points. Many of the platforms are very close to one another in terms of average commission rates. The difference between MediaMarkt and Fnac, for example, is very small, with averages of 13.7 percent and 13.6 percent respectively. Sellers on Bol also pay less than the average: 14.2 percent.

Selling on marketplaces involves more costs

For the study, FiveX analysed over 50 million orders, 5 million of which were placed in the last quarter. It took only commission costs into account. This means that no fulfillment, shipping or advertising costs were measured.

This is despite the fact that these costs make a significant contribution to the ultimate total costs of sellers on marketplaces. Including them could present a different picture of the costs for each platform.
