Ikea doubles pick-up points at Tesco

Ikea has opened its hundredth mobile pick-up point at Tesco, the largest supermarket chain in the United Kingdom. On this occasion, the Swedish furniture retailer announced plans to double this number. Almost 40 percent of Ikea’s UK sales now come from the online channel.

Ikea and Tesco piloted the next-day pick-up service in September 2022, with success. The retail giants decided on a countrywide roll-out, resulting in the establishment of the hundredth pick-up point. The service is free of charge for orders over 100 pounds and it costs 5 pounds for those below that amount.

Expansion

Ikea and Tesco will further expand their collaboration, aiming to open another hundred mobile pick-up points, half of which will be established this year. The announcement comes as Ikea reports that almost 40 percent of its total sales are made through online purchases.

Almost 40% of Ikea sales in the UK are made online.

The move will mean that over 90 percent of Ikea’s consumers in the United Kingdom will be within 5 miles of a pick-up point when the expansion is complete. There are two collection windows available daily.

Accessibility and convenience

“The opening of our one-hundredth mobile pick-up point marks an exciting moment for our journey to become more accessible”, states local Ikea customer fulfillment manager Jakob Bertilsson about the collaboration with Tesco, an online top seller in the UK. “As we continue to see a shift in our visitors’ wants to shop even more conveniently, we need to constantly develop and improve with better and more affordable services.”

Ikea online

Ikea, known for its large blue home furnishing warehouses, lagged in ecommerce for a long time but has since caught up. The cross-border top seller is now dominating the online furniture market in Europe together with Amazon.
