The total European DIY retail sector was valued at 368 billion euros in 2023. And 15.2 percent of that came from ecommerce sales, reaching 56 billion euros. The market’s ecommerce share is estimated to increase 18 percent by 2025, to 66 billion euros.

These data come from a new report published by Cross-Border Commerce Europe. The platform expects that the general DIY retail market in Europe will increase annually with 1.25 percent, to 380 billion euros by 2025. The total market is still stagnating, due to macroeconomic downturns and inflation.

Online DIY market to increase 18%

However, the European online DIY market is expected to grow more strongly. It is expected to be worth 66 billion euros by 2025, which is an increase of 18 percent compared to 2023. This growth is supported by marketplaces and specialized DIY retailers. By 2025, the online share of the DIY market is expected to be 17 percent.

Cross-border DIY share 23.5% in 2023

According to the report, in 2023 there was an increased market share of pure online competitors. This forced traditional DIY sellers to prioritize their cross-border ecommerce strategies.

Last year, the cross-border ecommerce DIY market was valued at 13.25 billion euros. This is a share of 23.5 percent compared to the total online sales in DIY. The share is expected to become 30 percent by 2025, reaching 19.8 billion euros.
