In the United Kingdom, 44 percent of adults add to their income by selling products or services online and 30 percent thinks they will do this regularly. And half of Britons would prefer to run an online store rather than a high street shop.

Zalando is a major European online fashion player and one of the few that could compete with Amazon on European ground. But it doesn't look at its American counterparts as much as it does at Asian companies. Zalando has learnt a lot from players like Alibaba.

Some leading online stores in Switzerland have collapsed under a rush of customers who visited their websites during Black Friday last week. Microspot, Manro, Interdiscount and Melectronics were among the online stores that couldn't handle the many visitors looking for hot deals.

Carrefour has over 800 hypermarkets, supermarkets and local stores in Poland and launched an online store in Poland last year. But this ecommerce website only offers non-food products. If we have to believe the rumors, that's about to change. Carrefour is said to sell groceries online in Poland.

German supermarket Lidl will start selling food online. The discount supermarket chain will start with a local experiment in Berlin this December. With Lidl selling foods and drinks online, its parent company Schwarz Gruppe is really pushing towards ecommerce. Another subsidiary, supermarket Kaufland, has started selling online recently.

Zalando gives small local retailers the opportunity to sell their products through its Fashion Platform. According to the German fashion giant, the future of commerce will be a seamless shopping experience for customers, whether products are available online or in local stores.

The German hypermarket Kaufland, part of the Schwarz Gruppe which also owns Lidl and Handelshof, has opened an online shop in Germany. But for now, the online delivery service is only available in Berlin. The website will offer the same prices as in-store.

Swiss supermarket chain Volg will further expand its online trade in 2017. The retailer already lets customers in selected villages order their groceries online and the concept has proven to be successful. Soon, more customers in Switzerland can order their goods on a larger scale.

The .shop top-level domain will be generally available starting September 26, which means everyone can buy a .shop domain. If it's still available, that is. Lots of major brands and retailers already registered during the so called Sunrise phase, with applications for names including etsy.shop, walmart.shop and facebook.shop.

Bol.com, the biggest online store in the Netherlands, continued its strong performance and reported growth in net consumer sales again. Together with Dutch online grocer Ah.nl, both are owned by Ahold Delhaize, the online business showed more than 30 percent growth during the second quarter, compared to the same period last year.

During the last two years, 15.9 percent of the households in the Netherlands have bought their groceries online at least once. Almost half of these households bought their foods and drinks online more than once. This segment accounted for 80 percent of the total online revenue generated by supermarkets.

Amazon was voted as the best online retailer in Germany. Perfumery Douglas and shoe retailer Deichmann ranked second and third respectively. There are no pure online retailers to be found in the top ten, which is filled with the online stores of large retail chains.

Lidl has opened an online store in the Netherlands. Dutch consumers are now able to order all kinds of non-food products, such as fashion, tools, home accessories and  kitchen tools & gadgets via Lidl-shop.nl.  The German discount supermarket wants to expand its online assortment in stages.

Hypermarket chain Kaufland, is readying an online grocery shopping operation in Berlin that will also include fresh food. It's not clear when the ecommerce service of Kauflan will officialy launch, but rumors say they will begin early next year with the online grocery shopping service.

Several European retailers aren't doing business in Ukraine, but there are online startups who sell these companies' goods in the Eastern European country. IKEA for example doesn't have an ecommerce site for Ukrainian consumers, so these people are now being helped by unsanctioned resellers.
