The mobile retail audience in Europe grew by 43 percent over the past year, with 20 percent of smartphone users visiting online retail sites and apps using their mobile phone. Also 1 in 7 smartphone users from the five leading European markets (the UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain)have completed a retail transaction on their phone in a month.

The ecommerce industry in Spain achieved a total value of 2.8 billion Euros during the first quarter of this year. It’s remarkable that 43.2 per cent of transactions are cross-border online purchases and only 40 per cent of the total volume relates to purchases from Spanish local sites.

Rakuten is really kicking it up a notch in Europe. Last week it was known that the Japanese ecommerce company is opening its fifth e-marketplace in Europa by launching Rakuten.at, now we’ve heard news about Rakuten opening an office in Barcelona, Spain. In five years the company wants to become the leader in the Spanish ecommerce market.
