The Otto Group is a German group of retail companies and retail-relatived service providers. The company has over 50,000 employees across the globe and achieved a total turnover of 13.7 billion euros in 2018. The Otto Group’s famoust brand is, of course, its online store Otto.de, but since the founding in 1949, the Otto Group now consists of 123 major companies. The Otto Group is present in over 30 countries in Europe, North and South America and Asia.
It started with 28 pairs of shoes…
Otto Gmbh was founded in 1949 by Werner Otto. In just ten years’ time, the mail-order company grew from a simple retailer that sold just 28 pairs of shoes to a company with 1,000 employees and an annual turnover of over 50 million euros.
In the sixties, Otto was already a major player in the German retail industry. The company’s turnover surpassed the 1 billion mark threshold for the first time in 1970.
Founding of delivery service Hermes
During the seventies, Otto Gmbh grew into the Otto Group and thus became a retailing and services group of companies. In 1972, Otto Versand found its own delivery service: Hermes. Two years later, the group’s international expansion began with acquiring a 25 percent stake in 3 Suisses International from France. In 1979, Otto entered the Dutch market.
In the eighties, Werner’s son Michael took over and he managed to turn the Otto Group into the largest mail-order group in the world. In 1989, Otto entered the Italian retail market with Euronova. In the nineties, Otto went online and launches its online store Otto.de in 1995. During this decennium, the company also expanded the business through several ventures in Asia and Europe.
The world’s number two online B2C vendor
In 2000, the Otto Group became the world’s number two online business-to-consumer vendor behind Amazon. Two years later, the company’s main brand Otto Versand changed its name to Otto. Nowadays, Otto has left its mail-order business behind and is a true ecommerce leader. Several Group companies achieve two-thirds of their sales through ecommerce.
In February 2020, Otto withdrew from Eastern Europe in the markets of the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary.
