Only two of the ten biggest online stores in the country are local companies. The others are international sellers. Some are from neighboring countries, while others, like Shein, are global sellers.

Ecommerce in Denmark is expected to reach 14.4 billion euros by the end of 2024. According to a study in 2024, around 54 percent of 1,000 Danish respondents shopped abroad online at least once a month. Cross-border shopping has become more popular in the country.

Matas
Drug store chain Matas was founded in Denmark in 1949. It currently has over 260 stores, and has grown into an international Group. It has also established a strong online presence in Denmark, as it has been in the top 10 biggest online stores for years.
Saxo
While not featured in the latest top 10, Saxo is a well-known online store in Denmark. It is the country’s first and largest internet bookstore. The online store went live in 2001. Since then, it has also added audio and book streaming services, with audio, e-books and podcasts.
Market dominated by international sellers
The top ten of the biggest online stores in terms of turnover is dominated by international ecommerce giants. Surprisingly, Amazon did not make the cut, though it is often a dominant sellers in other ecommerce markets in Europe.
Several of the international sellers that are popular in Denmark are from neighbouring countries, like Ikea, H&M and Boozt (all based in Sweden). But, there is still hope for local online stores. According to Statista, nine out of ten online shoppers in Denmark purchase products at local stores. With up to 83 percent of consumers shopping online at least monthly, there is still room to grow.
