Online shoppers in Ireland
According to research, up to 96 percent of all Irish internet users made an online purchase during 2024. That was the highest share of online shoppers in Europe. The European average during that year was 77 percent.
It is also noticeable that the online market in Ireland has grown significantly between 2014 and 2024. Back in 2014, only a little more than 60 percent of internet users bought something online. This also shows that the amount of online shoppers in Ireland has increased more strongly than the European average, which was 59 percent in 2014 (an increase of 17 percentage points).
The convenience of shopping from home is the most common motivator for online shopping in Ireland
According to another study in 2025, more than one in four (29 percent) Irish consumers increased their online shopping for household items and clothing during that year. The most significant growth in online shopping happened to consumers between the ages of 18 and 24. Up to 19 percent of them reported a major increase.
REASONS TO SHOP ONLINE – For 54 percent of Irish consumers, the convenience of shopping from home is a major driver for shopping online. Easier pricing and product comparison is also a common motivator (41 percent), as well as a greater variety of products (38 percent), and the benefits of avoiding crowds and queues (36 percent). Another 16 percent said that they enjoy receiving deliveries at home.

Online retail in Ireland
According to Statista, the online retail in Ireland was worth around 6.7 billion euros in 2024. Compared to 2019, that is a big change. At the time, ecommerce was worth around 2.2 billion euros.
The online retail market takes up a share of between 15 and 20 percent of the total retail market, in 2025. The ecommerce market in the country is expected to show an annual growth rate of 10 percent, up until 2029. In that year, the market could exceed 8 billion euros.
In 2025, 40% of Irish businesses are also selling online
In 2025, 40 percent of companies in the country are selling online, according to Eurostat. In 2023, the share was a lot lower, with only 30 percent.
POPULAR PRODUCT CATEGORIES – When looking at popular product categories, fashion was the biggest one in 2024. Up to 77 percent of Irish consumers bought clothing, footwear or accessories online. In second place came takeaway food, with 46 percent of consumers buying it.
This was followed by electronics and accessories (30 percent), and sports and fitness equipment. Households with children in Ireland had a 32 percent purchase rate in this category. And beauty and health products are also very in demand in the online retail market. Especially Irish women, they accounted for 53 percent of all online purchases in this category.
Biggest online stores in Ireland
